Vintage 1970 Fender Stratocaster 3-Tone Sunburst With Soft Case

Used And Vintage

1970 didn't just mark the end of the Swinging Sixties (aka the Psychedelic Era, aka the Age of Aquarius).  It also was the beginning of another turbulent decade that brought political and social upheaval, the rise of platform shoes, the dropping of bell bottoms and a ton of great music.  From Led Zeppelin to Parliament Funkadelic, not to mention countless others, it was a truly iconic period.

1970 was also quite the time at Fender.  The Stratocaster had boomed again in the late 60's after a slow period, thanks to Jimi Hendrix (and others).  In recent years, the desirability of Strats from this era has shot up.

A remarkable example of early 1970s Fender craftsmanship, this Stratocaster captures a pivotal moment in the brand's evolution. Built during the transitional CBS era, it showcases the distinctive design elements that emerged as Fender moved away from Leo Fender's original specifications toward the refined aesthetic of the decade. The three-tone sunburst finish and rosewood fingerboard exemplify the period's character, while its condition and originality make it a compelling instrument for collectors and players alike. This guitar carries the historical significance of an era when Hendrix and his contemporaries were defining electric guitar culture.

What you get is a classic 3-Tone Sunburst finish on the alder body, maple neck and rosewood fretboard.  It's comfortable to play thanks to its relatively slim neck, and of course sounds incredible.  This is a truly classic Strat right here.  Of course it has a good amount wear, because it was put to use, just as it should have been!  The techs in our shop have set it up to play perfect, and we've given it a full vetting.

This instrument came to us as all original.  That's the finish, pickups and hardware.  For full disclosure, here's everything we know:

  • There is no neck date stamp but all indications are that this is a 1970 model.
  • It has 1966 pots but Fender got a ton of those that year and used them for years, so this is common.
  • The pickguard has shrunk so all the screws are at an angle.
  • Although the frets are quite worn down, the guitar plays really well.
  • We did replace the original rubber pickup mounting tubing, as all 6 were crusty and worn out; the guitar now has new rubber tubing but the original are in a plastic bag in the gig bag.
  • Also, we found that the guitar's pickup cavity was routed at some point.

The original case sustained water damage so it's not included; we've paired this guitar with a premium soft case for safe transport.

We've seen some great vintage Strats here, and this is one of the coolest from the 70's that we've ever had.  Come to Truetone Music to experience it today, or order right here for it to be safely and securely shipped (fully insured) to your home.
