Fender Custom Shop Masterbuilt Jason Smith Custom Classic Jazz Bass NOS Zebrawood Natural With Case

Fender Custom Shop
Built By A Master

Throughout the years, Truetone Music has received a ton of Custom Shop basses.  They're all special, but when a Masterbuilt piece lands, it feels like an event, not just an instrument.  This is especially true with one like this.  As always, veteran Masterbuilder Jason Smith nailed it.   It's truly unique, as it's the only one like it to ever exist.

During a visit to the Custom Shop in Corona, CA, we sat down with Masterbuilders to dream up some of the coolest instruments we could.  When we met with Jason Smith, we had to do a few basses, as he's well-known in the bass world for doing some of the best Fender basses out there.   For this one, we tossed "period correct" out the window to cook up something entirely different.  This isn't gramps old bass.  It's a modern take on a Jazz bass with exotic woods.  We're excited to present this Masterbuilt Custom Classic Jazz Bass, featuring a stunning Zebrawood top, Handwound Vintage Jazz pickups paired with an active Aguilar preamp, and a slew of other features that take it to another level.

What you'll notice right away are the woods: this bass has a lot going on.  It's Okume body with a beautiful Zebrawood top, accented by black grain filler.  We asked Jason to go with something exotic, and he came through in a major way.  There's no way we'd want this bass painted, so it's Natural, to show off the wood grain.  We didn't know what it would look like, but when it landed, we were actually speechless.  We'll pause now so you can dive in and get lost in the photos.

The neck is the next feature that will grab your attention - it's a full Rosewood neck and fretboard, which is something you rarely see.  The wood was specifically chosen for this bass due to it's tight grain.  The finish is a smooth nitro lacquer on the back, so your hand won't get stuck as you slide around, and the fretboard is unfinish for a nice raw feel.  The bass has the Custom Classic C profile, which is slim and easy to play.  There's enough meat to give a bit of a vintage Fender bass grip but not too think, so you'll be able to move fast.  It also has the modern touch of a 9.5" radius and jumbo frets.  The contoured heel on the body helps to provide access in the highest register.

All of this by itself would be enough for a seriously cool bass, but it doesn't stop there.  We asked Jason to go with what he, as a bass player, would love to see for the pickups and electronics.

This bass is loaded with Josefina Handwound Vintage Jazz pickups to retain the most classic of bass sounds.  You get the distinct vintage character of warm lows, sweet singing highs and a midrange that will help in standing out without sounding harsh.  Every note is articulated clearly, with a balanced output.  These are highly responsive pickups that bring the early 60's vibe while adapting to your playing.  The added bonus is that this is active/passive bass, loaded with the Aguilar OBP-3 preamp.  You'll be able to tweak your tone with bass, treble and mid controls, while retaining high headroom and accessing the full dynamic range.  Full-bodied tone and versatility is what it's all about.  The active circuit is perfect for more modern styles but you can also switch to passive for a true vintage sound.  With the 18V power configuration you get an additional 6dB of headroom - and battery life is estimated at over 300 hours.

For hardware, this bass continues the modern mode of lightweight Fender Deluxe tuners and the Custom Shop RSD High-Mass bridge.   It was designed for increased sustain and stability, with a better transfer of sound between the strings and body.  Crafted from a cold-rolled steel base, it has brass saddles, and provides plenty of zing with the super powerful low end.  It's versatile too, as you can go string-though-body or top-loading.  This amazing bridge is exclusively available only on Custom Shop basses.

Other features include a blue Luminly side dots, a bone nut, and a side input jack.  The bass comes complete with a Custom Shop Deluxe Black case, strap and Certificate of Authenticity.

This amazing example from one of Fender's premier Masterbuilders was created as a one-off for Truetone Music - and we couldn't be happier with the result.  Don't hesitate, as it's a 2 - 3 year wait time for all Jason Smith builds, and this will be the only one like this every built.  Any Masterbuilt is a special instrument, and this one really stands out.  Come to Truetone Music to check it out today, or order right here to be shipped to your home.

About the builder:

A Custom Shop veteran and son of longtime Fender R&D legend Dan Smith, Jason Smith grew up on Fender—“It has always been in my family,” he said, “And I was always extremely interested in everything my father did.”
Born in Rochester, N.Y., and raised in California, Smith remembers meeting guitar greats from about age five on through his father’s work with Fender—Eric Clapton, Yngwie Malmsteen, Jeff Beck and Robben Ford, to name only a few. He went to his first big rock concert at age six—Rush—and Smith remembers going backstage with his dad and meeting Geddy Lee after the show. Before he was even in his teens, Smith was going to see Pink Floyd, ZZ Top and many other major artists.
Rock music and Fender are part of his DNA. Smith joined the Fender Custom Shop in 1995, and in 2006 completed a five-year apprenticeship under acclaimed Senior Master Builder John English. Among many diverse projects with English, Smith worked on a pair of double-neck Stratocaster guitars for Stone Temple Pilots guitarist Dean DeLeo. He has since crafted fine instruments for players and acts including John 5, Michael Landau, Flea, Josh Klinghoffer, Geddy Lee, Steve Harris, Reggie Hamilton, Linkin Park, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Neon Trees and many others.
