Taylor Truetone Custom Select guitars are all one-off pieces. Here we have a take on the stellar Gold Label Super Auditorium 814e, unlike any other out there. After admiring the photos, you can read all about it below.

This Taylor Truetone Custom Select Gold Label 814e boasts a body made of super flamed Hawaiian Koa hand-selected for it's incredible wood, paired with a Torrefied Sitka Spruce top. We specifically chose this combination while working with Taylor on the design of this guitar. It yields a played-in sound from the first strum that acoustic aficionados will find familiar and pleasing. The result is a well-balanced tone, with exceptional low-end presence, clear trebles and a complex harmonic character with overtones that bloom as notes resonate. Inside, a new iteration of V-Class bracing dials up longer sustain, greater volume and near-perfect pitch accuracy all the way up the neck. A new long-tenon neck joint improves overall resonance and sonic transfer, also providing super-precise adjustability whenever the need arises.

Taylor designed the Gold Label models to bring a traditional warmth and richness to their guitars. The result is a trusted flavor landing on the table. A wide variety of players can appreciate it, whether it be for fingerstyle or heavy strumming and everything in between.

This model features the new Super Auditorium body shape, similar to the well-known Grand Auditorium but with slightly wider contours that, along with a new fanned V-Class bracing variant, help it generate greater power while remaining focused and clear at any volume. The projection is powerful without being overbearing, the bottom end is present in a way not normally heard on a Taylor, and the top end shimmers just as you would expect. Simply put, it sounds amazing. This guitar has Taylor's standard carve neck profile, which is slim without being skinny and comfortable to grip for hours. The neck has a satin finish for smoothness.

The body is accented by Grained Invoroid binding, paired with a 800 Series Gold Label rosette. The goal was to not distract from the beautiful wood, so we kept the appointments simple. We went with simple Grained Ivoroid dots for the fretboard, matching the Continental inlay on the headstock. A nice touch is the Taylor script logo being done in Koa - that's something you don't see often. Other unique features include Taylor polished bronze tuners, a Firestripe pickguard and Ebony bridge pins with abalone dots (something we've done on all of our Custom Select guitars).

The guitar comes equipped with an L.R. Baggs Element VTC pickup/preamp. As much as we love Taylor's own ES2 system, we chose to go another route with this guitar. Part of the reasoning was to avoid any routing on the body - all of the controls are internal. Most importantly, we feel that the Element brings a "true" amplification to the guitar - in that it doesn't color the sound at all. If you're getting a guitar with these tonewoods, you want that tone to be pure when it comes out of the amp. You can still control it, from the soundhole. There's a good reason that our shop has installed the Element VTC in many guitars over the years - and it's because it's one of the best systems out there.
