Pre Owned Vintage 1974 Fender Precision Bass Blonde With Case

Used And Vintage Electric Guitars

1974 was a big year in music, specfically for bass lines - think of "For the Love of Money by The O'Jays, "Killer Queen" by Queen, and "Hollywood Swinging" by Kool & The Gang.  And don't forget the entire Up for the Down Stroke album by Parliament.

It's also when this prestigious Precision Bass was made.  Many collectors don't go for 70's Fender instruments, but players know that there are great pieces from this era.  The best have last, and show signs of being put to use as they should have been.  That's what we have here with this vintage 1974 Precision Bass.

This is a rare bird.  First of all, you don't see many Precision basses from 1974 out there - it's almost all Jazz basses.  Secondly, this one has a nitrocellulose lacquer finish, as opposed to the polyurethane that was typically used in that era.  Third, this bass is Blonde with a rosewood fretboard, something rarely seen.

In surprisingly good condition with honest player wear, this bass has all of the vibe you want, with natural aging that just makes it better.  It feels broken in, with a great playing neck.  The techs in our shop have set it up to play like butter.  Speaking of butter, the Blonde finish has a creamy look with perfect patina.  This is one of the cooler vintage basses we've had here, and best sounding.

The maple neck is topped with a rosewood fretboad, which has held up through the test of time over the last 50 years.  It's still in great shape.  It's a nice dark piece of rosewood.  We noticed right away how smooth this bass plays.  The nut width is 1.56", the depth at the 1st fret is .857", and the depth at the 12th fret is 1.02".

This Precision is all original with the exception of the the output jack and pickguard.  The original black pickguard is included - but we think it looks better with the white one.   The volume pot dates to the 42nd week of 1966; the tone pot dates to the 5th week of 1974.  The original case is long gone; this bass comes with a nice old school tweed case.  The tuners, bridge and pickup are all original.

If you're look for a bass that brings a balanced sound with the classic P-bass tone, you've found it here.  Massive, punchy and powerful with strong mids, this is a the sort of bass that can deliver in a variety of scenese.  There's a good reason that the model has been a top choice for everything from motown to punk.

We've had some great vintage basses here but this is one of the most interesting.  It's likely that this will go fast, so don't sleep on it.
