In the long history of Fender, there are a handful of body shapes that the brand is known for - and there are also a handful that had short lives before becoming cult favorites.  One of the most unique of these is the Katana.  Originally introduced in 1985, it was only built for 2 years, and then disappeared for 3 decades until the Custom Shop brought it back as a Masterbuilt instrument as part of the Prestige Collection.  Only a few have been built - and this is one of them.

The Black & White Dot Katana was built by Todd Krause, longtime veteran Fender Masterbuilder, for the 2017 NAMM show.  It debuted at the special Custom Shop 30th Anniversary Custom Shop Showcase event.  Since then, it has been owned by a single collector.  It never really got played, so it's in immaculate condition.  It has been vetted and setup by the techs in our shop, and plays perfectly.  It comes with the custom fitted hardshell case, Certificate of Authenticity and the original display card from the Showcase event.


The guitar features an alder body, set neck construction with tilt-back headstock on a rift cut maple nec.  It has a 60's C neck shape, so it's super comfortable to play.  It's topped with a dark rosewood fretboard, featuring a flat 12" radius and 6105 (Narrow Tall) frets.  A special feature (did it need anything else to make it special?) are the bowtie fretboard inlays done by "Red" Dave Nichols. 

It's not just about the looks - the Katana sounds absolutely amazing.  It features a set of Rocket Pickups Satellite Black & Tan humbuckers.  These have a punchy bottom end, creamy mids and biting highs.  They're of the vintage flavor, clean up nicely and can also go straight to shredding if that's what you need - and on a guitar like this, we have a feeling that's what you'll be doing.  These handwound pickups sound big, and have a great dynamic response.  

The Masterbuilt Katana we have here defines the word rare - it's the only one ever made.  Krause has done another Katana or two, but not in this finish.  Not only is it an amazing guitar, it's a highly collectible piece.  Come to Club Fender at Truetone Music to see it in person, or order right here to add it to your collection.

ABOUT THE BUILDER:
Todd Krause has built exquisitely crafted custom instruments for many of the world’s greatest artists, including Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, David Gilmour, Robbie Robertson, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Robin Trower, Roger Waters and many others.  His guitar-building apprenticeship began in early 1981 at Jackson/Charvel guitars. Krause arrived at Fender in 1991 and steadily rose through several roles, including one-off instrument builder, R&D model maker, and woodworking machinist. He became a Custom Shop Master Builder in 1997 and has since created countless distinctive instruments, all of which embody his personal design philosophy:  “Form and function are the biggest part of it,” he said. “It’s about the way an instrument sounds and feels. It has to look cool, and it has to compel you to play.”
