Pre-Owned Fender Custom Shop Limited Edition Tom Petty Kingman Signature Acoustic Black With OHSC

Over the years, we've had a lot of special guitars here at Truetone, including some with great backstories. Here is one that jumps out in a spectacular way, for a variety of reasons. First, some background....
In 2013, Fender introduced the Acoustic Custom Shop, located in New Hartford, Connecticut. The location was chosen because that's where the Guild factory was (which Fender owned at the time). Operated by Fender’s most experienced guitar luthiers, the Fender Acoustic Custom Shop debuted with a commitment to delivering the highest levels of acoustic guitar craftsmanship. The following year, a special model was introduced: the Limited Edition Tom Petty Kingman.
Only 25 were made, with 7 going to Petty himself, so only 18 were available for the world. Only 1 was sold in Southern California, which was allocated to Truetone Music by the Fender rep. That's this exact guitar. It was sold to a longtime regular customer, who held it for years until selling it to a friend, who has now brought it back to Truetone to be sold again. This is the only one on the market - and from what we can tell through extensive research, it's the only Tom Petty Kingman to have entered the market since the original sale of new ones in 2014.
Beautifully crafted with the famed singer/songwriter's personal style and specs and bearing his signature on the back of the headstock and on the soundhole label (hand-signed by Petty), this is a guitar like no other. It's a great-looking, rich-sounding tribute to one of rock's most enduringly acclaimed figures. With the Heartbreakers, the Traveling Wilburys, on his own and more, Petty crafted hit after hit for decades. Since his passing in 2017, the legacy has continued.
The Tom Petty Kingman is a feast for the eyes, ears and fingers alike. The gorgeous body in nitro gloss black is elegantly adorned with a gold pickguard, checkerboard rosette, ivoroid top and back body binding, and black-ivoroid-black purfling. Two control knobs (volume and tone) are mounted on the AA Sitka spruce top, which also features "forward X" red spruce bracing. The genuine mahogany back and sides are crafted with Sitka spruce back bracing and basswood kerfing. The result is a full, rich sounding acoustic guitar. It has a strong bass response but isn't overly boomy - we found it to be well balanced. It also sings well, and is suitable for a variety of styles.
The maple neck has a comfortable "modern C"-shaped profile, dual-action truss rod and gloss natural finish with a special "Midas gold" tint, all topped by a '62-style Stratocaster headstock with vintage-style "wing" string trees. That iconic headstock definitely sets this apart from other acoustics - it's something only Fender can pull off. The neck is very comfortable to play, and is topped off with a 20-fret Indian rosewood fingerboard with 10" radius, rolled edges and custom clay-colored dot position inlays.
Other premium features include Stratocaster-style bone nut; Fender "Viking"-style Indian rosewood bridge with compensated bone saddle, bone pins and maple plate; and vintage-style tuners. The guitar is ready for live performance, as it's loaded with a Fishman VT-2 pickup/preamp system with a lower strap-button output jack and the two top-mounted controls mentioned above.
The original hardshell case is included, as is the Certificate of Authenticity. Also included is a special commemorative letter from Fender. Additionally, the guitar comes with a copy of the Men's Journal magazine featuring Tom Petty on the cover with this guitar (not that we're saying it's the actual one - just saying this model). The original leather strap that came with the guitar is included as well. The techs in our shop have setup the guitar to play perfectly, and it's ready to go.
To tie it all together, the aforementioned Fender rep that got the guitar to Truetone in 2014 left Fender a few years later to become the co-owner here at Truetone. More importantly, it's worth noting that the last filmed interview that Petty did was at Truetone, for the documentary "Echo in the Canyon".
This is a true collector's piece - not only is one from a very small run, but it's a rare American-made Fender Custom Shop acoustic. And it's signed by Tom Petty, one of the greatest songwriters of all time. It's a great find for fans of Petty, Fender, or just acoustic guitars in general. It's the only one out there, available here at Truetone Music.
