This Tele precursor commands attention with its single bridge pickup and full-throttle wiring---capturing player feel and articulation, while screaming with legendary Esquire tone and style. Wearing a carefully aged Journeyman Relic lacquer finish, the Time Machine '59 Esquire Custom has the looks and playing feel of a true vintage example.
The Esquire was the first solid-body guitar sold by Fender, debuting in 1950. Shortly after its introduction, a two-pickup version came out, was renamed the Broadcaster, then the Telecaster. Over the years, many players have fallen in love with the simplicity of the Esquire, and the Fender Custom Shop has done an amazing job in recreating this 1959 version, complete with binding on both sides of the body, making it an Esquire Custom.
First of all, the guitar is unbelievably resonant and smooth playing. It has a light ash body (the guitar was just 6.2 lbs!) and a rock solid quartersawn flame maple neck. The Large C neck shape gives you plenty to grip without feeling too big. It measures .850" at the 1st fret and .990" at the 12th fret. That gives it a really comfortable feel. The flame on the neck is really nice too - check out the photos, but it's even better in person. It has a 9.5" radius and 6105 (Narrow Tall) frets, so you get the vintage vibe with modern playability.

This build was done as a Journeyman Relic - there's finish checking, and a few small dings on the body - all minor, nothing major, just normal player wear you'd see on a vintage guitar. It has the look of a guitar that's been played extensively but not abused. The neck has a nice broken in feel. All around, it's amazing playing guitar.
Originally, this guitar had a '58 Tele bridge pickup, but that has been swapped out for a Custom Shop '51 Nocaster pickup, to give it even more of an old school tone. Created with the original design in mind to accurately mimic the twang and shimmer of the original Nocaster guitar, this period-correct single-coil pickup impart tight low end and clear, balanced midrange. You get enamel-coated magnet wire for warm vintage tone, flush-mount magnets for even string response, Alnico 3 magnets for more focus and enhanced dynamics, a tin-plated copper base plate, and period-correct cloth output wire and fiber bobbin. It can cut through with a bite when it needs to, but also cleans up nicely, making this guitar surprisingly versatile.
Other features include period correct tuning machines and bridge, bone nut and a single ply parchment pickguard. Also includes the original hardshell case and certificate of authenticity.
