Used And Vintage

We just took in one of the coolest Esquires we've had, this Limited Edition offering from the Fender Custom Shop.  Built in 2022, it might as well be a new guitar, considering that it's has a Super Heavy Relic treatment.  It's the '50 Pine Esquire in Nocaster Blonde, and it's amazing.

This guitar truly looks old, and its tone sounds pure vintage.  The body is super resonant - it's made of Eastern Pine, something you don't see very often but was used by Fender in the late 1940's and early 1950's.  The earliest prototypes of the Esquire had it, so this is a great throwback.  Pine is an excellent tonewood that the company has started using again in modern times.  It provides a warm, rich and punchy tone that compliments the snap of the maple neck.  Also, it's known to be lightweight (this guitar comes in at just 6.8 lbs).

The neck has that wonderful “big feeling” at the 12th fret and a subtle smaller taper towards the nut.  It incorporates a compound radius, a characteristic that might seem unusual on a recreation like this, but was indeed present in vintage instruments, primarily resulting from natural aging rather than intentional design. Having a rounder fretboard near the nut combined with a flatter radius higher up the neck greatly benefits both chord playing and bending while running leads up high. This guitar purposefully recreates that feature, offering an exceptionally smooth playing experience. The fretwork is flawless, and the well-worn maple feels incredibly smooth when moving along the neck.

The hand-wound Blackguard pickup delivers excellent tonal quality and is paired with Fender’s Full Throttle Esquire wiring. This setup provides “volume and tone” control in position 3, “volume only” in position 2, and direct bridge pickup output in position 1. The final position offers a sharp, cutting tone that perfectly channels classic honky tonk vibes but can also be used for a variety of style.  It's interesting how a single pickup can like this can be so versatile.

Other features include all slot head screws, a single ply black pickguard, and an engraved neck place.  Everything on it is original; the certificate of authenticity and original tweed case are included.

This Fender Custom Shop Limited Edition 50's Pine Esquire is a serious guitar with an ubelievable vibe to it.  The techs in our shop have set it up to play perfectly.  We have a feeling that it won't be around for long.
