From modern versions of legendary Gretsch instruments to artist tribute models and specially requested one-off guitars, the Gretsch Custom Shop takes “That Great Gretsch Sound” to an entirely new plane, but also preserves and perfects it.
Truetone Music is proud to have a long and close relationship with Gretsch, especially with the Custom Shop. Every year, we make a pilgrimage there to sit down with Masterbuilder Stephen Stern and his team to cook up a batch of Custom Shop guitars. Sometimes we go for vintage-styled recreations, sometimes we go for modernized tweaks. Sometimes it's a classic color, sometimes it's a totally new color or even reclaimed wood. Either way, they always knock it out of the park!
This G6136CS 1962 Seafoam Falcon is a perfect example of what the Custom Shop can do. A classic take on one of the most classic guitars of all time, this isn't just any Falcon - it's a one of a kind in Seafoam Green, with a Closet Classic treatment, built as a Doublecut. Truetone Music was fortunate enough to obtain this guitar. It's the only one that exists.
You'd be hard pressed to find a better playing or sounding Gretsch hollow body anywhere. The C shape neck is extremely comfortable, and while this is a big body of course, it still balances perfectly. Even with the Bigsby (a classic Gretsch element), it's still not that heavy, coming in at 7.8 lbs.
Stephen Stern chose the pickups, going for what best provides the legendary Gretsch sound as heard on many guitars before: TV Jones Classics. It doesn't get any more classic sounding than this. This is the pickup that started it all - the TV Classic captures that vintage twang and growl characteristic of the late 1950's Filter'Tron. Originally designed from an analyzed 1959 "Pat. Applied For" Filter'Tron, the TV Classic is one of the most popular and most versatile pickups out there. It sits right between a typical Fender (bright single-coil) & Gibson (darker & thick humbucker) with a unique growl when you dig in. Clean, compressed treble and mids breath life over a tight and controlled low-end.
The Closet Classic Seafoam Green finish is what makes this a unique take on a highly sought-after guitar, and a rare find. The checking is some of the best we've ever seen, and that's included the many Custom Shop guitars we've received over the years. It's what everyone here noticed right off the bat, as soon and we pulled the guitar out of the case. It's perfectly done. The way that Stern did cannot be described by words - check out the photos, which show it well but in-person it's even better.
