Fender Custom Shop Masterbuilt Austin MacNutt Exotic 1962 Telecaster Custom Ziricote NOS Natural With Case
Masterbuilt Austin MacNutt Exotic 1962 Telecaster Custom
Truetone Music is proud to have a long and close relationship with Fender, especially with the Custom Shop. Every so often, a new Masterbuilder joins the ranks - when that happens, we jump right into it with them to forge a new partnership. This stunning 1962 Telecaster Custom is a result of that approach. It's one of one - there is no other like it out there. The Alder body is topped with a gorgeous Ziricote top - that's the main calling card of this guitar. The NOS lacquer finish in Natural allows the wood grain to really show, especially with Ivoroid binding to frame the body perfectly. The final result blew us away when it landed. Ziricote is one of the most visually grabbing woods that you'll see on a guitar, and we hand-picked this piece for the unique grain. Even though every spread presented was great, this one in particular stood out as the winner.
The untinted maple neck sports a 60's Oval "C" shaped profile, which is the most popular for Custom Shop builds. It's not too fat to play, and not too skinny - it's the perfect amount of wood to grip. It's capped with a flat lam (slab) rosewood fretboard. Throughout the years, most players have gravitated towards a 9.5" radius and 6105 (narrow tall) frets - so those are two tweaks that we made on this guitar. The result is a vintage vibe with modern playability. The craftsmanship on the neck is incredible. As a Masterbuilder, Austin has this art down to a science, and this is one of the best playing Telecasters we've had in a very long time.
It's not just about looks and feel - the third element - the sound - is where this guitar really shines. It's loaded with Custom Shop Handwound '63 Tele pickups to give it the vintage tone that is beloved by Tele players everywhere. These recreate the sound of a classic mid-60's Tele, using Alnico 2 magnets, enamel wiring and a vintage stagger, with strong output and a nice, even response across the tonal spectrum. Compared to 50's Tele pickups, these have a bit more roundness and midrange, suiting a wider variety of styles. But, of course, you can still get that classic twang. Plenty of bite with warmth to spare, that's how we'd say it.
We stayed period correct for the hardware, going with vintage tuners, bridge, etc. The idea is to have everything you'd expect in a vintage Tele from 1962, with the slight tweak of modern playability and of course an aesthetic that you would have never seen back then. The guitar comes with a Custom Shop case, strap and Certificate of Authenticity.
ABOUT THE MASTERBUILDER: AUSTIN MACNUTT
Canadian born in a family of performing musicians, some of Austin’s earliest memories contain acoustic and electric guitars, including his father’s 1963 Custom Color Black Fender Jaguar with matching headstock that is still in the family. Following in his parent’s footsteps, he took up guitar playing at the age of 10 and soon found himself tinkering on it to improve playability and tone. Throughout his teens, Austin developed his building and repair skills and became the local go-to repair tech for many of the bands passing through.
After graduating high school in Saskatoon – Austin saved up and enrolled himself at the Guitar Craft Academy in Hollywood to further his skills and passion for guitar building. Recognizing his talents, immediately after completing the course the school offered him a position as one of their teachers. During these 5 years of teaching guitar building, he met Ron Thorn during an inlay seminar, and shortly after was offered a position at Thorn Guitars. For 11 years Austin crafted boutique electric guitars under the Thorn brand. From raw lumber selection, millwork, CNC operation, fretwork, final assembly – Austin did it all and once again is working shoulder to shoulder with his old friend, now crafting Fender’s finest.
When Austin is not building guitars, he enjoys spending his time with his girlfriend playing music and going camping whenever and wherever he can.
