Used 2011 Fender Custom Shop Masterbuilt Jason Smith 1961 Stratocaster Orange Burst with OHSC

Used And Vintage

There aren't many guitars that stop us in our tracks, but this one did when it came through the door.  This isn't too surprising, considering it was built by veteran Masterbuilder Jason Smith, but this one is nothing like any Strat we've seen.  That's exactly what he and the other dream-makers at the Fender Custom Shop do.

Right off the bat, your eyes will be captivated by the finish - according to the spec sheet, it's called Orange Burst, but we're not entirely sure if that does the trick in describing it. This is not an official Fender color - the guitar was done as a one-off, and is the only one out there like it.  We can pause now while you look at the photos and try to mentally describe it to yourself.   After all, a picture is worth a thousand words, and we have beautiful pictures for you to view.  Be sure to zoom in closely to see just how stunning this guitar is.  As great as these photos are, trust us, it's even better in person.  That's always the case when it comes to a finish like this.

it's a transparent finish, so you feel the nice wood grain of the Ash body underneath.  It's not just that - the other main calling card of this Strat is the AA Birdseye Maple neck.  Again, it's stunning.  We've seen some nice necks here but this one really stands out.  The grain is incredible.

For the neck, this one has an increasingly popular profile, the 60 Oval C.  You get a classic Strat feel, with a satin lacquer finish that's super comfortable to play.  The neck is topped with a dark Rosewood fretboard, another unique twist.   For comfort and familiarity, the guitar has a modern 9.50" radius.  It also sports Jumbo (6100) frets, so you'll be able to bend to your heart's content.  This neck has an amazing feel, is easy to play, and of course looks unbelievable.  Jason Smith absolutely nailed it.

The Custom Shop 50's Strat pickups give you THE iconic sound from the era that made the Strat so famous.  You get the classic bell-like highs, with a pronounced bass response, and just the right touch of mids.  It's a very balanced set, and sounds great in any of the 5 positions (a modern touch).  The middle pickup is Reverse Wound Reverse Polarity, so you get great hum canceling in positions 2 and 4.  The pickups bring pure Strat tone with a bit of an extra punch.  This guitar sounds downright amazing.

The uniqueness of the guitar doesn't stop with the color - not only does it have black hardware, but also black pickup covers and knobs to complete the look.  Other features include a white pearl pickguard, vintage tuners and bridge, and a Custom Shop V logo neck plate.  The guitar comes with a Custom Shop Deluxe case and signed Certificate of Authenticity.

This amazing example from one of Fender's premier Masterbuilders.  We have a feeling that it was created for the 2011 NAMM show or perhaps a special event.  Any Masterbuilt Stratocaster is a special instrument, and this one really stands out.  The guitar is in excellent condition, has been setup to play perfectly by the techs in our shop, and is ready to go.  Come to Truetone Music to check it out today, or order right here to be shipped to your home.

About the builder:

A Custom Shop veteran and son of longtime Fender R&D legend Dan Smith, Jason Smith grew up on Fender—“It has always been in my family,” he said, “And I was always extremely interested in everything my father did.”
Born in Rochester, N.Y., and raised in California, Smith remembers meeting guitar greats from about age five on through his father’s work with Fender—Eric Clapton, Yngwie Malmsteen, Jeff Beck and Robben Ford, to name only a few. He went to his first big rock concert at age six—Rush—and Smith remembers going backstage with his dad and meeting Geddy Lee after the show. Before he was even in his teens, Smith was going to see Pink Floyd, ZZ Top and many other major artists.
Rock music and Fender are part of his DNA. Smith joined the Fender Custom Shop in 1995, and in 2006 completed a five-year apprenticeship under acclaimed Senior Master Builder John English. Among many diverse projects with English, Smith worked on a pair of double-neck Stratocaster guitars for Stone Temple Pilots guitarist Dean DeLeo. He has since crafted fine instruments for players and acts including John 5, Michael Landau, Flea, Josh Klinghoffer, Geddy Lee, Steve Harris, Reggie Hamilton, Linkin Park, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Neon Trees and many others.
