Over the years, the Fender Custom Shop has done an array of incredible runs, including special anniversary collections for legendary store. This is one of them, to celebrate West L.A. Music's 40th Anniversary. They partnered with Fender to create the "Ultimate Vintage Strat", which was not meant to be year specific, but rather a compilation of greatest hits. Only 50 were made and this is # 37 (based on the serial).

This 2008 Fender Custom Shop limited edition represents a significant piece of guitar history from the West L.A. Music 40th Anniversary series. Built to exacting Custom Shop standards, it features vintage-inspired specifications paired modern playability, along with hand-wound pickups by the legendary Abigail Ybarra. The lacquer finish, Candy Tangerine color and Heavy Relic treatment gives it a true custom aesthetic, while the commemorative neck plate documents its collectible status.
The guitar has a resonant alder body with the full Heavy Relic treatment of heavy checking, gouges and dings. The maple neck is properly worn in as well, giving it a great feel. It has the 60's Oval C profile (.790 - 930"), which is the most popular for Custom Shop guitars. For a touch of the late 60's, the neck has a maple cap. The modern tweak is the 9.5" radius and 6105 (narrow tall) frets, making it easy to play and bend, even when up in the higher register.
Yes, the pickups are Abby's - we verified that she marked them on the bottom. It's a custom set with tone spread across eras: the bridge pickup is a Fat 50's Strat to give a little more thump and output, the middle pickup is a '60 Strat to provide the classic transition era tone, and the neck pickup is a '69 Strat to bring in the iconic late 60's vibe. All of the pickups were wound by the Queen of Tone, Abigail Ybarra. She is the most legendary pickup winder of all time, having starting in 1956 and staying for over 50 years Her pickups are high in demand and add value to this already special guitar.
Other features include a single-ply parchment pickguard for a 50's touch, a bone nut, and vintage hardware. A commemorate neckplate is included on the guitar. The original hardshell case, Certificate of Authenticity and all other case candy is included. It has been setup to play perfectly by the techs in our shop.
Now for the bit of extra history: this guitar was built for West L.A. Music, kept in the back, and then obtained by Fender District Sales Manager Sunir Patel when the store closed in 2012. He kept it in his home office as a collectible memento. 6 years later, he left Fender and is now the owner here at Truetone Music. Now, for the first time, the guitar is available.
